Advantages of Skin Cancer Clinics

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers to affect Australians. This is because the harsh UV rays of the sun act as an initiator of skin cancers by damaging the cells of the skin causing them to grow abnormally. When detected early, skin cancer can be effectively treated allowing patients to make a full recovery.

There are three major types of skin cancers:

  • Basal cell carcinoma- This usually appears patches of brown or scaly skin on areas exposed to the sun such as the face and neck
  • Squamous cell carcinoma- This occurs in the squamous cells of the skin that make up the outer and middle layers. It appears as a firm red nodule with scaly crust.
  • Melanoma- This is the most dangerous type of skin cancer as it can spread to the body in its early stages. It appears as dark brown/black spots on the skin.

Skin Cancer Clinics

In order to identify and diagnose skin cancer a patient first has to go to their GP. The GP will then refer them to a skin cancer clinic. These clinics are facilities that are better equipped to diagnose skin cancers. All doctors in these clinics are skin cancer specialists who have worked with many skin cancer patients before. One of the advantages of visiting skin cancer clinics as opposed to dermatology clinics is the wait time. Patients typically only have a small wait when visiting skin cancer clinics so they can be seen faster.

Skin cancer clinics offer a range of other advantages including:

  • Computerised Skin Scanning Technology- This is becoming the 'gold standard' for diagnosing skin cancer. This is because these powerful machines have superior magnification ability allowing the doctor to view the patient's skin extremely close. This allows the doctor to analyse any abnormal areas of the skin to identify skin cancer in its early stages. The doctor will also be able to store the images of patient's skin spots so that even if nothing seems suspicious now, they can perform regular checks to see if spots have grown over a certain period of time.
  • Tailored treatment options- Skin cancer clinics will give detailed information about the various treatment options the patient has. This helps patients to make clearer decisions so they can opt for the best treatment.
  • Costs- These clinics are usually bulk billed meaning that the patient is covered under the government's medical scheme so they don't have to spend excessive amounts of money.
